Stop Windows from Changing File Names

In some versions of Windows, Explorer changes the case of your filenames so that a file you name

c:\ILikeToTypeLikeThis

appears as

c:\Iliketotypelikethis

Microsoft calls this PrettyPath (I call it annoying). This can be changed in the Folder Options of some versions of Windows by ticking "Allow Uppercase Filenames." Or, you can enable/disable it in the registry by performing the following steps:

  1. Click Start - Run
  2. Start regedit.exe.
  3. Go to
    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Advanced.
  4. Double-click DontPrettyPath (or create this key with a type of REG_DWORD if it doesn't exist).
  5. Set the value to 1 to keep the case as you type it or 0 to adjust the case as Explorer sees fit.
  6. Click OK.
  7. Close REGEDIT.
  8. Log off and back on for changes to be effective.
