How to Get Rid of the "Shared Documents" Folders in My Computer
Requires the use of the Registry Editor
Requires the use of the Registry Editor!
If you don't know what you are doing in the Registry, or even what
it is, then DON'T DO IT. This tip is intended for users who are
familiar with the Windows registry and tinkerers who don't mind an
occasional "uh-oh" and rebuild.
One of my pet annoyances about Windows XP. Microsoft targeted the
operating system at a wide range of users, but having "Shared Music" and
"Shared Pictures" showing up at the top of the My Computer window is just
downright irksome. Even more annoying is the fact that they appear
when you're not on a network....so who are you sharing these things with?
You can't change this idiotic default in the control panel. But
you CAN get rid of these annoying defaults. Here's how:
Open REGEDIT.EXE. The easiest way is to fire up
Start, then Run, and enter REGEDIT into the box.
Navigate your way to the following key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE \ SOFTWARE \ Microsoft \ Windows \
CurrentVersion \ Explorer \ My Computer \ NameSpace \ DelegateFolders
There is a sub-key with this ugly looking name:
{59031a47-3f72-44a7-89c5-5595fe6b30ee}
Delete it. You don't need to reboot, the change is effective
immediately.
